What?

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a science-based family skills training program designed to increase family bonding and reduce risk factors for behavioral, emotional, academic and social problems. Parents and youth attend weekly SFP skills classes together, with separate breakout sessions for parents and kids during the first hour, followed by a joint family practice session the second hour.

The program is based on an award-winning model developed in 1982 by Dr. Karol Kumpfer, a psychology professor at the University of Utah. Through a series of structured games, activities and discussions, parents learn how to better monitor their children’s emotional well-being and reduce risk factors for substance abuse, mental health problems and delinquency.

Who?

The SFP family skills training program is designed for high-risk and general population families, and is recognized nationally and internationally. It can be implemented in many different community settings, such as schools, drug treatment centers, family or youth services agencies, community mental health centers, housing projects, homeless shelters, churches, recreation centers and drug courts.

Why?

The SFP focuses on improving family relationships, parenting skills, and youth’s social and life skills. This evidence-based program promotes bonding (creating warm, loving relationships), setting clear, firm boundaries (rules against antisocial behavior, including drug and alcohol use), and monitoring children’s emotional well-being and activities to see that they always stay in an alcohol and drug-free social environment.

Using documented evaluation tools, SFP skills-training is proven to be effective in reducing multiple risk factors for later alcohol and drug abuse, mental health problems, and delinquency.  Participants report:

  • Increased family bonding
  • Increased parental involvement
  • Increased family organization
  • Increased youth cooperation
  • Increased number of pro-social friends
  • Increased youth social competencies
  • Improved parenting skills
  • Improved family communication
  • Improvedyouth school grades
  • Decreased family conflict
  • Decreased youth depression
  • Decreased youth aggression
